This week, extensive naval drills involving the United States and South Korea were held in the Sea of Japan, featuring the nuclear aircraft carrier «USS George Washington». Reports from Yonhap indicate that
over ten combat ships and maritime patrol aircraft from both nations participated in the exercises, which took place from Tuesday to Friday.
The US contingent included the guided missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls and destroyers USS Milius and USS Shoup, equipped with the Aegis missile defense system.
The South Korean Navy sent destroyers ROKS Yulgok Yi I and ROKS Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong, also armed with Aegis defense systems.
During the four-day drills, crews from the allied ships and aircraft conducted practical training in anti-submarine warfare and air defense, as well as maritime logistics support.
«The goal of these exercises was to enhance joint deterrence against North Korea... and to improve the operational interoperability of the South Korean and US naval forces based on their steadfast defense alliance,» stated the South Korean Navy command.
