On Saturday morning, a landslide occurred in the Rift Valley region of western Kenya following heavy rainfall, leading to the deaths of at least 13 people. This information was reported by Reuters.
A total of 19 individuals were rescued, while an unknown number are still considered missing, according to Peter Mulinge, the police commander of Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
Kenya's Interior Minister, Kithure Kindiki, stated that military and police helicopters were deployed to assist in the rescue efforts.
In recent years, hundreds of people have died in Kenya due to landslides and floods, with scientists asserting that climate change is causing increasingly severe and frequent extreme weather events in the country. During last year's worst incident, 61 people perished due to a landslide and sudden floods in central Kenya.
