The American company Google is set to invest $15 billion in establishing an artificial intelligence data center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. This news comes from a report by Reuters.
“This is the largest AI center we plan to invest in outside of the United States,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian during an event in New Delhi.
He added that the investment of $15 billion will be made over the next five years.
“This is part of a global network of AI data centers across 12 different countries,” he noted.
According to him, the data center in the port city of Visakhapatnam will initially have a capacity of 1 gigawatt, with plans for scaling up to several gigawatts.
Earlier, Indian officials had estimated Google’s investment in the center at $10 billion, which, according to the state government, is expected to create 188,000 jobs.
This contribution from the tech giant will mark the largest investment in India.
Overall, this year Google has committed to spending about $85 billion to expand data center capabilities as major tech companies are actively investing in new infrastructure to meet the rising demand for AI services.
It’s worth mentioning that the American tech giant Google announced a £5 billion investment in artificial intelligence in the UK ahead of US President Donald Trump’s visit to the country.
