In the Netherlands, on the night of October 8, police apprehended a group of activists who occupied a building on the Radboud University campus in Nijmegen, Gelderland province. According to NOS, a total of 23 individuals were detained.
"The occupation of one of the Radboud University buildings in Nijmegen came to an end last night. Pro-Palestinian activists had held a laboratory on the campus since yesterday. Police reported that 23 demonstrators have been detained and are currently in custody," the statement reads.
It is noted that the protest was aimed against a potential partnership between the university and an Israeli institution. The activists demanded a complete severance of academic ties with Israel and initially planned to remain in the building until concessions were made by the administration.
Radboud University condemned the occupation, stating that the protesters had "crossed a line," as on October 7, pro-Palestinian activists occupied a university building, taking control of a laboratory containing hazardous materials.
University representatives and the mayor described the protesters' actions as dangerous. The occupied building housed superconducting magnets and cooling gases, which could have caused an explosion if damaged. Therefore, police, fire services, ambulances, and bomb disposal units were dispatched to the scene. All detainees remain in custody.
