Honoring Jens Stoltenberg's Contributions to Security

Jens Stoltenberg, the former NATO Secretary General, has been awarded the prestigious title of «Knight of Freedom 2025» for his impactful contributions to global and European security. The award ceremony took place during the Warsaw Security Forum, as reported by a correspondent from Ukrinform.

“When I became the Secretary of Defense, my first call was to Jens. I knew I could always rely on him… During his tenure, Europe faced its gravest conflict since 1945 (the Russia-Ukraine war - ed.). NATO emerged not only unscathed from this period but also stronger, larger, and more united,” said former U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in his speech.

The general recalled how in February 2022, he and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Stoltenberg.

“It was a very concerning conversation. Yet Jens remained calm and composed — exactly the type of leader needed in times of turmoil,” he added.

Attendees of the ceremony noted that Stoltenberg led NATO from 2014 to 2024, navigating the Alliance through profound geopolitical challenges, including the onset of Russia's large-scale invasion of Ukraine. Under his leadership, Finland and Sweden joined the organization. Additionally, Stoltenberg became the chief architect of the strategy to enhance NATO's eastern flank and adapt the Alliance to new threats, from cyberattacks to challenges in space.

“He was a true servant leader who prioritized 'we' over 'I.' He built bridges that connected oceans, mountains, and even centuries of historical disputes,” remarked Rob Bauer, former Chairman of NATO's Military Committee, speaking about Jens Stoltenberg.

The «Knight of Freedom» (Rycerz Wolności) award is a Polish international accolade presented annually to outstanding individuals who promote values such as freedom, justice, and democracy. In 2022, this award was given to Olena Zelenska, the wife of the President of Ukraine.
