European countries are producing six times more ammunition than they did two years ago, yet further acceleration is essential to meet NATO's demands.
This was stated by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte during the opening of the new Rheinmetall factory in Unterlüß, where he noted that annual production of artillery shells is expected to reach 2 million units.
Rutte emphasized the importance of expanding production in tanks and air defense systems.
«I urge Rheinmetall and all partners to raise production rates and leverage collaborative opportunities to strengthen the Alliance's defense capabilities», he added.
According to Rutte, the Unterlüß plant aims to produce 350,000 shells annually, while overall Rheinmetall factories are set to release 700,000 shells this year.
In light of challenges posed by Russia and China, NATO must enhance its defense industry by implementing innovations demonstrated by Ukraine.
«We need to ramp up production and reduce dependency on supplies from third countries», he noted.
The Secretary-General highlighted the critical importance of the defense industry in Germany and other nations for ensuring the security of Europe.
He also praised the rapid construction of the new factory, which took only 14 months.
«This is necessary to ensure our safety amid rising threats from Russia and China», Rutte concluded.
This year, Russia plans to produce 1,500 tanks, 3,000 armored units, and hundreds of missiles, indicating their military ambitions.
Rutte also commended Germany for taking a leadership role in increasing military expenditures, which is vital for all of Europe.
As reported, Rheinmetall today opened its new factory in Germany.
