A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 struck Balikesir province in Turkey, leading to one fatality and 29 injuries. Over ten buildings collapsed as a result.
This was reported by CNN Turk referencing the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the Associated Press.
The earthquake occurred on Sunday, with its epicenter in the town of Sindirgi, felt as far away as Istanbul, approximately 200 kilometers away.
An elderly woman died shortly after being rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building in Sindirgi, as stated by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. Four other individuals were also rescued from that structure.
Yerlikaya reported that a total of 16 buildings, mostly abandoned, collapsed in the region. Two minarets of a mosque were also among the fallen structures.
According to the minister, none of the injured are in critical condition.
AFAD noted that several aftershocks followed the main quake, including one measuring 4.6, and urged citizens to avoid entering damaged buildings.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan wished a speedy recovery to all affected citizens.
"May God protect our country from all disasters," he wrote on social media platform X.
The Associated Press mentions that Turkey is located on major tectonic fault lines, making earthquakes a common occurrence.
