At least 54 migrants have lost their lives after a boat carrying around 150 people sank near the coast of Yemen due to worsening weather conditions on Sunday.
This information was reported by Reuters.
According to local health officials, dozens of individuals are considered missing.
The boat capsized near the Ahwar area in the southern Yemeni province of Abyan, along the Arabian Sea.
It is reported that 10 out of approximately 150 people on board were rescued – nine Ethiopians and one Yemeni, but many remain unaccounted for. Two medical workers stated that rescuers are still searching for survivors.
The International Organization for Migration notes that Yemen continues to experience a significant influx of illegal migrants from Africa.
Each year, migrants cross the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait on precarious boats to reach Gulf countries in search of work.
The International Organization for Migration classifies the route from the Horn of Africa to Yemen as "one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world." According to the organization, over 60,000 migrants arrived last year.
