A large forest fire broke out on August 22 near the Greek city of Corinth, prompting authorities to evacuate residents from several nearby villages.

This information was reported by WP.

The local fire service stated that over 180 firefighters, 15 aircraft, and 12 helicopters were engaged in combating the forest fire in the pine forests near Corinth.

Weather conditions were particularly challenging for the firefighters, with temperatures soaring to around 40°C in many parts of the country.

According to Ekathimerini, local officials reported that by Wednesday morning, the fire had been brought under control, although teams remain on high alert to extinguish flare-ups near the village of Karteri and prevent potential re-ignitions.

"We had a very tough night, but it seems the worst is behind us," said the deputy regional governor of Corinthia, Anastasios Giolis.

It is reported that on Tuesday, authorities arrested two men suspected of starting the fire.

According to the arson investigation department, witnesses claimed the men were performing welding work near the fire's origin.

The suspects were later arrested and each fined €11,812.
