The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed that accelerating Ukraine's accession to the European Union could become the strongest security guarantee for the nation following the end of the conflict.

Details: Speaking at a plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on "The EU's Role in Establishing Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine", Ursula von der Leyen noted that Ukraine's accession to the EU would be a major guarantee of a just peace.

Direct quote: "We must accelerate Ukraine's path to membership in our Union. This is not just Ukraine's ambition – it could be the strongest security guarantee. This was the focus of my recent meeting with President Zelensky in Rome.

Details: The President of the European Commission expressed her belief that "a bad deal could encourage Putin to return with renewed force, which would be a recipe for increased instability and insecurity".

"Conversely, a just and lasting peace could usher in a new era of prosperity for Ukraine and help us build a new security architecture for Europe," she emphasized.

Thus, von der Leyen outlined three priorities for the EU on the path to establishing just peace for Ukraine: "First, support Ukraine's defense capabilities. Second, complete the phased withdrawal from Russian fossil fuels. And third, accelerate Ukraine's accession process to our Union".
