Starting in May, the capital of Estonia, Tallinn, will cease to provide funding for housing and translation services for Ukrainian refugees under temporary protection.

Previously, Ukrainian refugees could receive a one-time compensation to cover rental costs, enabling them to find permanent housing in Estonia.

"Support is not disappearing; it is becoming more targeted and stable," stated Liis Paloonts, head of the migration department at the Social Insurance Board.

She noted that Estonia is gradually returning to the standard procedure, where assistance is primarily given to those applying for international or temporary protection, who lack support in the country and reside in state accommodation centers while their cases are reviewed.

She added that following Tallinn, the Social Insurance Board is considering ending similar agreements with other local communities to ensure a unified approach to aid distribution across the country.

This will also ensure that the support provided to Ukrainian refugees will depend solely on their need for assistance in relocating from the accommodation centers.

Since the program's inception in June 2022 until April 2025, nearly 11,000 Ukrainian families have received this compensation, including 1,710 households in 2024, 62% of whom utilized support in Tallinn.

The maximum compensation amount reached up to 1,200 euros per household.
