In the United States, representatives of the Democratic Party have initiated a new bill aimed at strengthening assistance to Ukraine in its struggle against Russia, as well as imposing strict sanctions on Moscow.
Source: Reuters referring to an unpublished version of the bill.
Details: Congressman Greg Meeks, a leading Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced a bill that envisions multi-tiered support for Ukraine, including funding for security needs and post-war recovery, alongside enhanced sanctions against Russia.
According to the document, the first section reaffirms support for Ukraine and NATO and proposes the establishment of a special coordinator for Ukraine's recovery. The second section pertains to security assistance, including direct loans and military funding. The third discusses stringent sanctions and export controls that will impact Russian banks, the energy sector, and officials of the Russian Federation.
According to informed sources, this is yet another attempt to pressure President Donald Trump's administration to adopt a clearer stance in favor of Kyiv.
Quoted: "Such actions in Congress reflect the growing concern among lawmakers from both parties about Ukraine's fate, as Republican President Donald Trump has taken a more conciliatory stance towards Moscow since the beginning of his second term on January 20."
Details: According to congressional aides who worked on the text, even if the bill does not gain full support in the House of Representatives, its individual provisions may be included in a broader package of decisions related to Ukraine.
"This bill will certainly become part of a larger legislative discussion," – noted one of the co-authors.
Quoted: "Despite maintaining bipartisan support for Ukraine during three years of full-scale war, more and more Trump allies among Republicans are expressing a more cautious position regarding assistance to Kyiv after their party gained control of the House of Representatives, and from January 2025 also over the White House and the Senate."
Background:
- In early April, a bill was introduced in the US Senate regarding new sanctions against Russia for the Kremlin's refusal to engage in a peace agreement, including a 500% tariff on goods from countries buying Russian oil and gas.
- On April 14, President Donald Trump attributed the responsibility for the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine not only to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin but also to his predecessor Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
- Commenting on Volodymyr Zelensky's proposal to purchase American Patriot missile defense systems to protect Ukrainian airspace, Trump stated that "you can’t start a war against someone who outnumbers you 20 to 1 and then expect people to give you missiles."
