On April 6, the national day of mourning in Ukraine, the Ukrainian community in Valencia held a silent tribute in front of the Basilica of the Virgin Mary to honor the children who lost their lives in the Russian attack in Kryvyi Rih on April 4.
“This tribute became a significant artistic expression and a human cry that is hard to forget,” organizers stated.
The event began with a prayer. Father Alvaro, the priest of the Basilica, addressed the crowd and conducted a memorial service, explaining why they were there – without slogans and banners, only with pain in their hearts.
During the tribute, not only lullabies were played but also harrowing audio recordings from the tragedy in Kryvyi Rih, including the voices of parents and children.
“This was one of the most painful moments that conveyed the harsh reality of war without embellishments,” noted the organizers.
Participants also recited the “Our Father” together, followed by a moment of silence.
The event was initiated by the Ukrainian diaspora in Valencia. It was created and executed by Ukrainian volunteer and director Pavlo Bekezin.
Up to 200 people from Valencia and other cities in Spain participated, along with attendees from Poland and other European countries.
“Spaniards and random passersby joined in, embracing, crying. Tears were everywhere. This was grief shared among nations,” the organizers remarked.
At the initiative of the church's clergy, memorial services will be held at the Basilica of the Virgin Mary over the next week for each child who lost their life.
“We thank Valencia for your embrace, your sorrow, and your actions. But the time for sympathy is over. It is time for decisive actions,” the community concluded.
