Ukraine has introduced a new system for monitoring air quality. This system outlines the key pollutants and their acceptable levels for assessing overall air quality.
The corresponding order (No. 590 dated March 24, 2025) has been registered with the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, as reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
"This document is vital for ensuring transparency of information regarding air quality for the public", – emphasized the ministry.
The document includes the following points:
- list of major pollutants;
- levels of these substances for index calculation;
- color and text indicators of the index;
- recommendations for the public on health protection.
The air quality index is categorized as follows:
- "Critically Poor";
- "Poor";
- "Moderate";
- "Acceptable";
- "Good".
"The concentration ranges for the air quality index are based on international norms and WHO recommendations regarding air purity. This system was developed in line with European air quality standards", – added the Ministry of Environmental Protection.
It is worth noting that in February, a systematic decline in air quality was observed in Kyiv, prompting residents to stay indoors with windows closed.
The accumulation of pollutants in the air was exacerbated by unfavorable weather conditions, including a lack of precipitation and weak winds.
