Ensuring a Safe Learning Environment in Kyiv

The need for a safe educational environment in Kyiv is critical, especially during wartime. This was emphasized by Valentyn Mondryiivskyi, the Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, on his Facebook page.

According to him, in 2024, 1,300,277 thousand UAH will be allocated for the construction and renovation of educational institutions in the capital. For repairs of kindergartens and schools, 1,986,961 thousand UAH has been allocated.

“The majority of these funds are directed towards creating shelters, with a quarter for roof repairs, and the rest for window replacements, facade insulation, modernization of engineering networks, and ensuring accessibility. Kyiv has over a thousand municipal educational institutions, so the amounts seem significant. However, all these measures aim for one goal: to create a safe educational environment,” commented Valentyn Mondryiivskyi.

He provided an example of the completion of shelter renovations in 64 educational institutions in the Darnytsia district and the ongoing construction of three new shelters. Energy-saving measures (capital repairs of facades and roofs) are being implemented in 21 institutions. Two kindergartens that were inactive due to the need for complete restoration are also undergoing major repairs.

In the Holosiivskyi district, the construction of four new shelters and the reconstruction of a school with an attached shelter are underway. In 29 educational institutions, shelters are being repaired, in 28 energy efficiency measures are being introduced, and in 18, engineering networks are undergoing major repairs.

In three schools in the Dnipro district, dual-purpose buildings with radiation protection properties are being constructed. Shelter repairs are underway in 52 educational institutions, while energy efficiency measures are being implemented in 55.

Valentyn Mondryiivskyi emphasized that most of the new shelters are dual-purpose structures, providing protection for both students and the civilian population.

He also noted that Kyiv, as the largest city in Ukraine, has accommodated and is providing education for the largest number of internally displaced persons during the full-scale invasion. Therefore, comparing Kyiv with other cities during tenders for the construction and reconstruction of educational institutions is inappropriate.
