After four weeks of power outage, repair operations on the damaged external power lines at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant have begun. This was announced by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi on social media platform X.
According to Grossi, this was made possible by the establishment of local ceasefire zones, allowing the continuation of repair works at the NPP.
“Restoring external power supply is crucial for nuclear safety and security. Both sides have constructively collaborated with the IAEA to implement a complex repair plan,” the statement noted.
It is worth mentioning that on September 23, the last external power line of the NPP was disconnected. The backup line was damaged by Russian forces back in May, and since then, the occupiers have not provided safety guarantees for the repair crews of NEC “Ukrenergo.” Energoatom confirmed that the external power line of the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the territory controlled by Ukraine is operational. The Russian side intentionally does not reconnect the plant to the power supply, continuing a gross disinformation campaign against Ukraine. On October 2, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russia intentionally disconnected the Zaporizhzhia NPP from the Ukrainian power grid and is preparing to reconnect it to its own energy system.
