International Support for Nuclear Safety in Ukraine

The General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency has adopted a resolution titled «Nuclear Safety, Physical Nuclear Safety, and Safeguards in Ukraine», which calls for the immediate de-occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant by Russia.

This has been reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

"The resolution includes a direct call for the immediate withdrawal of all unauthorized military and other personnel from the ZNPP. The document confirms that the Zaporizhzhia NPP and all nuclear facilities in Ukraine must operate under the full sovereign control of competent Ukrainian authorities," the statement reads.

The document also reaffirms the mandate and ongoing work of the IAEA mission at the ZNPP despite constant attempts by Russia to undermine its activities.

Additionally, the resolution highlighted the risks associated with Russian strikes in the Chernobyl zone and damage to the New Safe Confinement, which poses threats to international nuclear safety.

"We are grateful to every country that supported this important document. 62 votes in favor is a clear stance of the civilized world: nuclear terrorism is unacceptable, and the Zaporizhzhia NPP occupied by Russia must be immediately returned under Ukraine's control. We will continue to work with the IAEA and our partners to ensure the implementation of every point of this resolution," commented the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Svitlana Hrynchuk.

Ukraine, for its part, insists on strengthening international pressure on Russia to ensure the full and unconditional implementation of all IAEA resolutions and the return of the Zaporizhzhia NPP under Ukraine's control.

It is worth noting that the ZNPP has been under occupation since March 4, 2022. Since then, the IAEA has repeatedly adopted resolutions calling for the return of the facility under Ukraine's control. None of these resolutions have been implemented.
