Innovative Approaches to Forest Restoration in Kyiv

image

In Kyiv's Partisan Glory Park, plants are being planted using a modern technique developed by a Japanese botanist.
The Miyawaki method — one of the most advanced methods for forest restoration on depleted lands. Its creator — Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. This technology mimics the natural process of forest formation, facilitating rapid tree growth and significant carbon absorption. This was reported by the Darnytsia District Administration.
The main principle of the Miyawaki method — the use of local tree species that could naturally grow in the area, creating a diverse, multi-layered green space. This results in a stable ecosystem where plants complement one another.
As a result, a forest can form in 20–30 years instead of 150, making this method particularly valuable for modern reforestation programs.
Kyivzelenbud plans to implement Miyawaki gardens in every district of the city. This initiative was proposed this year by the Department of Environmental Protection of the Kyiv City State Administration.
