Google has announced the rollout of a new AI Inbox tab in Gmail, leveraging the Gemini model to analyze incoming emails and generate summaries of key topics and tasks. This functionality marks a significant transition into what is being called the 'Gemini era' for Gmail.
The AI Inbox harnesses the capabilities of the Gemini model to scan a user's inbox and automatically create a list of essential actions. The system identifies priorities based on the content of emails and offers quick access to messages that require urgent attention. Each recommendation will link to a specific email, allowing users to review the context.
Google emphasizes that these new tools are designed to reduce email overload and simplify email management. The AI Inbox complements existing Gemini features in Gmail, including automatic summaries of lengthy email threads and assistance with drafting emails.
The company also points out that the AI functions in Gmail adhere to privacy requirements. Inbox data is not used for training the AI models, and users can disable these tools in the settings. However, Google warns that AI systems can make mistakes and advises users to verify the suggestions provided.
Along with the launch of the AI Inbox, Google is making several AI features available to all Gmail users, which were previously exclusive to paid Workspace subscriptions. This includes the Help Me Write tool, which allows users to create or edit emails based on text prompts, as well as AI Overviews for automatically summarizing long email threads.
Additionally, Gemini can now assist in searching for information in the inbox, respond to inquiries like 'what is this email about?' or 'what needs to be done?', and summarize individual messages without manual commands. All these features are seamlessly integrated into the Gmail interface and operate in the background.
Advanced tools such as stylistic editing, deep AI search across the inbox, and thematic summaries from multiple emails remain available only to subscribers of Google Pro and Ultra plans.
The AI Inbox is currently being gradually rolled out and is in the beta testing phase.
