Group Chats in ChatGPT: New Features for Users

OpenAI has announced the rollout of a new group chat feature in ChatGPT, recently unveiled.
Following a week of testing in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, this feature will soon be available to all users of the service, regardless of their subscription plan (Free, Go, Plus, or Pro).
This function allows users to create group chats where they can invite others via a link. Up to 20 participants can join the chat. Users can join either using an existing ChatGPT account or by registering a new one. Participants can collaboratively formulate queries to ChatGPT and respond to each other’s messages.
OpenAI clarified that the content of group chats is not stored in ChatGPT’s memory. Any participant can remove another from the chat, except for the creator.
Previously, the company stated that group chats in ChatGPT will operate based on GPT-5.1 Auto – a system that automatically determines the best model to use based on the query's content and the user's subscription plan.
Additionally, OpenAI recently introduced the new language model GPT-5.1 with two operating modes: Instant and Thinking. This update aims to enhance the model's intellectual capabilities, execute instructions more accurately, and expand personality settings.
