PayPal Teams Up with ChatGPT for Enhanced Shopping Features

PayPal has entered into an agreement with OpenAI to integrate its payment wallet into the ChatGPT platform. Starting next year, users will be able to make purchases directly through the ChatGPT interface, while sellers can offer their products right on this platform. This was announced by PayPal CEO Alex Criss in a statement to CNBC.

Criss stated that hundreds of millions of PayPal users will have the ability to make secure purchases by clicking the "Buy with PayPal" button in ChatGPT. He referred to this as a "new shopping paradigm," where artificial intelligence acts as a personal assistant.

The agreement includes consumer protections, such as package tracking and dispute resolution. Criss emphasized that both buyers and sellers undergo verification by the fintech company, which reduces fraud risks. Users will be able to pay for purchases using linked bank accounts, credit cards, or stored balances.

PayPal will also handle the technical aspects of the process—routing sellers, verifying payments, and other transaction processing elements. This will allow sellers to operate through ChatGPT without needing separate registration with OpenAI.

PayPal joins the early partners of OpenAI that are expanding the use of ChatGPT in e-commerce. Previously, OpenAI announced partnerships with Shopify, Etsy, and Walmart.

The company also announced plans to expand the use of OpenAI's enterprise products to optimize internal processes, including speeding up the development of new services.

PayPal aims to become a key payment platform in the age of AI-driven shopping, as evidenced by its recent partnerships with Google and the AI company Perplexity.

It is worth noting that OpenAI is officially transitioning to a commercial basis. The nonprofit part of the company has been named OpenAI Foundation and will now oversee the profitable structure of OpenAI Group PBC. Meanwhile, the main mission of the company remains unchanged: to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.
