Google has announced a new feature in its Chrome browser aimed at reducing unwanted notifications. According to TechCrunch, this update will automatically revoke notification permissions from sites that users haven't interacted with for a long time.

The feature will be available on both Android and desktop versions of the browser.

This mechanism will function similarly to the existing Chrome security checks that revoke permissions for the camera or geolocation from inactive sites. The company reports that less than 1% of notifications receive any user interaction, indicating their low effectiveness.

However, Google will make exceptions: automatic revocation will not apply to installed web apps, as they can send useful notifications.

The changes will only affect sites with low user activity and a high volume of notifications. This could prompt sites that send excessive notifications to reconsider their policies to retain access to this feature.

Users will receive notifications about revoked permissions and will be able to restore them in their settings. Additionally, there will be an option to completely disable automatic management of this process.

Google stated that this feature was tested prior to its official launch, and the results showed that the changes did not significantly affect the number of clicks on notifications, confirming that most users barely interact with such notifications.
