Starting August 13, 2025, YouTube will implement an enhanced AI model that will automatically identify user accounts belonging to individuals under 18 years old. User age and account activity will be considered, after which appropriate restrictions will be imposed on minors.
These restrictions will include blocking age-restricted videos, displaying only non-personalized ads, reminding users to take breaks, and limiting repeated recommendations on sensitive topics, including body image. Additionally, minors will automatically receive privacy reminders when commenting or uploading videos.
YouTube will notify users if they are classified as teenagers. In cases of error, users will be able to verify their age through a document, selfie, or bank card.
This initiative is part of a broader campaign by Google to enhance online safety for children. Similar measures have already been implemented in the United Kingdom and are being considered in various states in the USA and the EU.
YouTube warns that some creators may earn less as recommendations will not target child accounts. Initially, the new system will be tested with a small group of users in the USA, before rolling out to other countries.
