SpaceX has clarified the reasons behind the recent widespread outage of Starlink, attributing it to a software update. According to the company, the network was overloaded during the update process on ground computing clusters, leading to failures of key services. This was reported by PCMag.
The disruptions began on July 24 at around 10 PM Kyiv time, affecting users globally, including Ukrainian military personnel. At peak times, Starlink serves over 6 million customers worldwide. The majority managed to regain network access within 2.5 hours, but some subscribers reported connectivity issues extending into the next day. This was the longest outage experienced by Starlink since its launch.
After services were restored, some users noticed improved connection speeds — reaching up to 250 Mbps or more, compared to previous averages of 110–150 Mbps. This led to speculation that the update was intended to enhance network performance.
However, other users have continued to report problems with speed and stability. The Starlink support page currently recommends rebooting equipment, including third-party devices.
