The Closure of goo.gl: What You Need to Know

In exactly one month, on August 25, 2025, Google will officially shut down shortened links at goo.gl. The company first announced this intention in July 2024. Users attempting to access old links will encounter a 404 / Not Found error.

For the past year, Google has been displaying an interim page warning that short links will soon cease to function. If you visit goo.gl directly, you will see a support page explaining the company's decision.

In 2019, Google discontinued the Google URL Shortener tool, but the links that had already been generated continued to work until 2024, when the company declared they would be turned off, as over 99% of them were no longer in use.

This decision is justified by the significant changes in how people discover content online and the emergence of many new popular URL shortening services.
