Introducing OpenAI's New Virtual Assistant

OpenAI has unveiled its latest feature, the ChatGPT Agent — a virtual assistant capable of efficiently managing a computer and executing complex tasks. This agent is already available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers, with a corporate rollout scheduled by the end of summer.

Unlike traditional chatbots, the Agent can interact with calendars, create presentations, analyze documents, make online purchases, schedule meetings, and perform everyday actions like booking restaurant tables. It operates within a virtual environment that includes a browser, terminal, file system, and other tools, allowing it to autonomously handle requests.

The feature is built on a new model capable of interacting with multiple tools simultaneously. The development team has combined the efforts of the Deep Research and Operator projects; however, unlike the latter, the Agent executes actions independently within the virtual environment, while Operator requires human involvement in task execution.

ChatGPT Agent can:

  • Analyze calendars and organize events;
  • Create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations;
  • Work with user files;
  • Conduct searches and make bookings through third-party services;
  • Generate reports and process web data.

Before carrying out irreversible actions, such as sending emails or placing orders, the tool requires confirmation. Some functions, including transactions, are temporarily restricted, and certain websites are accessed in Watch Mode.

The feature is currently unavailable in the European Economic Area and Switzerland. OpenAI has not announced specific timelines for a launch in these regions.

This new tool arrives amid increasing competition in the AI agent space. Companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Anthropic, and startups like Klarna are already implementing similar solutions. According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT Agent represents a step towards creating an AI model that not only provides consultation but also performs real-world tasks.
