Microsoft has quietly revealed that it will stop introducing new features for Microsoft 365 (Office) on Windows 10 users as of August 2026. While security updates will remain available until October 2028, functional innovations will begin to phase out as early as next year, according to The Verge.
For Microsoft 365 Personal and Family users, new Office capabilities on Windows 10 will cease to be delivered in August 2026, coinciding with the termination of support for business users on the Current Channel. Subsequently, on October 13, 2026, new features will stop arriving for Monthly Enterprise Channel users, and on January 12, 2027, for Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel users.
Earlier this year, Microsoft had already abandoned its prior plan to completely halt security updates for Office on Windows 10, agreeing to extend them until 2028. However, the company did not disclose that from 2026, new Office features would only be available on Windows 11.
This marks another step by Microsoft towards the end of support for Windows 10, which is officially scheduled to conclude on October 14, 2025. After that date, Office updates will only consist of security patches without new functionalities.
Although Microsoft is actively encouraging users to switch to Windows 11, millions of devices worldwide still operate on Windows 10. Even though Windows 11 recently surpassed the "ten" in usage share for the first time, the transition is slow. For home users, Microsoft has offered the option to continue receiving security updates for free for another year by activating the Windows Backup feature.
