Microsoft has announced the discontinuation of the password saving feature in its Authenticator app. Starting June 2025, users will be prohibited from adding or importing new passwords into the app. As of July, the password autofill feature via Authenticator will be unavailable, and by August, all saved passwords will be deleted. Additionally, any payment information stored in Authenticator will also be removed.
However, passkeys will remain accessible within the app, allowing users to securely log into services without the need to memorize complex passwords.
For those who wish to stay within the Microsoft ecosystem, saved passwords can be viewed and used through the Microsoft Edge browser, which supports its own password manager with autofill capabilities. Users not utilizing Edge are advised to consider alternative password managers, such as 1Password, LastPass, Bitwarden, or others compatible with various platforms and devices.
This change aligns with Microsoft's strategy to enhance security and transition to modern authentication methods that minimize risks associated with password breaches. Passkeys supported in Authenticator are deemed more secure and convenient.
Users are strongly encouraged to export their passwords from Microsoft Authenticator to another manager in advance to avoid losing access to important accounts after August 2025.
