Microsoft Introduces New Edge APIs for AI Integration

At the Build 2025 conference, Microsoft unveiled new APIs for the Edge browser that allow web developers to incorporate artificial intelligence directly into their applications. This was reported by The Verge.

The APIs provide access to the Phi-4-mini model, which operates locally on devices and features 3.8 billion parameters. As a result, web applications can utilize AI for text generation, editing, and summarization without needing cloud connectivity. Microsoft is also planning to release an API for text translation, enhancing local AI capabilities.

The company positions these APIs as potential web standards, compatible with other AI models and operable across various platforms, including macOS.

Developers can already test the new APIs in Edge Canary and Dev versions, giving the Edge browser a competitive edge against Google Chrome, which also offers similar APIs supporting text and image generation, as well as translation.
