The newly elected Pope Leo XIV has stated that artificial intelligence (AI) represents one of the most significant challenges humanity faces today. This was reported by news outlets.
He emphasized that technological advancements, particularly in AI, threaten human dignity, justice, and labor rights. The Church must respond to these changes by applying its social teachings to protect people’s rights.
In his first address to the College of Cardinals, he explained that his choice of name was inspired by Pope Leo XIII, who called for social justice during the industrial revolution.
The Church offers its social teachings in response to the new industrial revolution and the development of AI, which pose new challenges for the protection of human dignity, said the new Pope to the Cardinals.
Leo XIV's predecessor, Pope Francis, also expressed concerns regarding AI, warning about the risks of creating false narratives and calling for international regulation of the new technology.
Leo XIV made it clear that his papacy will focus on the ethical aspects of technological advancement and the protection of human rights in the digital age. He urged for responsible use of AI to avoid its negative impacts on society.
