Apple is examining the potential of integrating AI search capabilities from OpenAI, Perplexity, and Anthropic into the Safari browser. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, believes that AI-driven searches could eventually replace traditional search engines like Google, as reported by Bloomberg.

Cue made this statement while testifying in the U.S. Department of Justice's lawsuit against Google. The lawsuit centers on a deal worth about $20 billion that designates Google as the default search engine in Safari.

He noted that while AI search will not be enabled by default, it is expected to appear in the browser eventually. Cue also mentioned that the company is already in discussions with Perplexity.

During his testimony, Cue pointed out that the number of searches in Safari dropped for the first time last month, attributing this to a growing number of users opting for AI over traditional search engines.

Currently, Apple offers ChatGPT integration from OpenAI within Siri, and may expand its offerings with Google’s Gemini by the end of the year. Cue also highlighted that the company is considering integrating AI from DeepSeek and xAI.

Despite this, Cue believes that Google should remain the default search engine in Safari, citing the financial benefits of the existing partnership between Apple and Google regarding conventional search.

Additionally, Cue suggested that iPhones may become obsolete in 10 years due to the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technology.
