Ukrainian athlete Danilo Aonishiki Yavgusishin has made headlines at the Kyushu 2025 sumo grand tournament taking place in Fukuoka, Japan.
On the ninth day of the event, he faced off against the maegashira Hiradumi, and the match turned out to be quite competitive. However, Danilo's agility secured him the win.
He currently holds a record of 8-1, placing him firmly in second position overall. The leading yokozuna, Onosato, boasts a perfect 9-0 record. A few rikishi have statistics of 7-2.
Tomorrow, on November 18, the 21-year-old Aonishiki will meet Tamawashi on the dohyo, who put up a commendable fight against Onosato yesterday but has a tournament record of 4-5.
The competition will continue until November 23, and if several wrestlers finish with the same record, a playoff will be held.
Sumo wrestlers, regardless of their nationality, choose names for their performances. Danilo has taken the ring name Aonishiki Arata, which translates to "Blue Brocade" — a metaphor symbolizing youthful yet vibrant talent or noble strength in a young body.
