The achievement of the young athlete from Kyiv was reported by the Department of Youth and Sports of the Kyiv City State Administration.
The path to success was challenging: Nikita Koshman started his competition from the 1/32 finals, defeating several strong opponents, including favorites and Olympic champions. His technique and determination serve as an example for the entire sports community.
«This medal is a significant event for the fencing school of Kyiv and confirms that Ukrainian athletes represent our country with dignity on the international stage», emphasized the Department. — This year’s World Championship in Tbilisi was special as the Ukrainian team earned three medals: one gold and two bronzes, with Nikita being one of the heroes».
At the National University of Physical Education and Sports, it was noted that Nikita Koshman is a third-year student at the Department of Combat Sports.
The 23-year-old from Kyiv has become only the fifth Ukrainian fencer to achieve an individual podium finish at world championships. Following in the footsteps of Maxim Khvorost, Bohdan Nikishin, Roman Svichkary, and Ihor Reizlin, as stated by the Kyiv City School of Higher Sports Mastery.
Nikita Koshman (ranked No. 114 in the FIE world ranking), competing in individual events at the World Championship for the first time, became the main sensation of the tournament in Tbilisi.
Having confidently passed the preliminary stages, today in the main bracket on his way to the podium, he first defeated Kasper Tafenau (15:14), then triumphed over Olympic bronze medalist Mohamed El-Sayed (14:11), and overcame European Games champion Tristan Tuelen (15:12). Winning against reigning European vice-champion Matteo Galassi (15:13) secured him a medal!
On the central strip of the championship, Koshman found himself competing against three Olympic champions: Japanese fencers Koki Kano and Masaru Yamada, as well as Hungary's Gergely Siklos. Unfortunately, he lost to the latter in the semifinals (9:15).
Prior to this, Nikita's highest achievement at the adult level was team medals at the World Cup (silver and bronze in 2022), and he is also a two-time medalist in the youth European Championship team events. His best result in individual events at this level had been 25th place at the Grand Prix in Cairo in 2022.
Congratulations to the athlete, the coaching team, his family, and everyone who supported him on this journey!
