The Kyiv City Council has approved a new report from the Commissioner for the Rights of People with Disabilities, highlighting the state of these rights in 2023. The document provides a detailed analysis of the situation in the capital, including responses to rights violations and measures to ensure accessibility.
As noted by Commissioner Lesya Petrivska, over 1,400 complaints about violations of the rights of people with disabilities were received in the past year across various areas, including healthcare, education, social services, and housing.
«Key issues include access to medical services, public facilities, and educational institutions. Despite positive developments, such as the establishment of barrier-free routes, persons with disabilities still face numerous challenges. For effective outcomes, close cooperation with local authorities and NGOs is essential. We are actively working on new initiatives to ensure the rights of people with disabilities», – emphasized Lesya Petrivska.
The report also includes practical recommendations for improving the urban environment, such as equipping apartment buildings with accessibility features, enhancing parking facilities, increasing the availability of online services, and training civil servants on how to communicate with people with disabilities.
«The approved initiatives are concrete steps towards creating a barrier-free environment in Kyiv. We must also raise public awareness about the issues faced by people with disabilities, as upholding their rights is not only a legal obligation but a moral imperative», – concluded Lesya Petrivska.
