In the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, part of Lavrska Street has been renamed in honor of the famous Hetman Ivan Mazepa. The section from Slava Square to Dobrovolchy Battalion Street will now bear his name, while the other part leading to Navodnytska Square has been restored to its historical name – Novonavodnytska Street. This was reported by the Kyiv City Administration.
This initiative was supported by 72 deputies during the Kyiv City Council meeting on December 4.
Council member Olesya Pinzenyk, who initiated the renaming, noted that residents of Kyiv have been advocating for the name change since 2022, supporting an electronic petition.
The proposal was discussed and endorsed during public hearings.
The National Reserve "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra" and the National Museum of Holodomor-Genocide also expressed their support.
"Ivan Mazepa is one of the most significant figures in Ukraine's history, a patron who made substantial contributions to the development of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. His name should be immortalized on the street where the temples were restored with his funds. The change of the street's name in 2010 at the demand of the Moscow Patriarchate was a humiliation of Ukrainian history and a direct influence of the enemy on our local government," emphasized Pinzenyk.
"Today, we are restoring Kyiv residents' right to their own memory. I thank everyone who fought for this decision and urge you to actively participate in shaping the cultural environment of our city," she added.
