At the AUSA 2025 exhibition in Washington, AM General introduced the next generation of its 105mm Hawkeye mobile howitzer, which had previously seen combat testing during the war in Ukraine.
The latest version of the Hawkeye combines an updated chassis with a new power unit and enhanced design. The company describes the howitzer as a "lightweight, maneuverable, robust, and lethal" solution for modern combat operations.
The manufacturer stated that the howitzer can transition from travel to combat mode, fire a shot, and revert back in just 90 seconds. This capability enables artillery units to strike and relocate before enemy sensors or drones can detect their position.
"At the core of the system is patented soft recoil technology that reduces recoil force by up to 60%. This breakthrough allows the integration of heavy-caliber weapons on an agile and sturdy platform, creating a new class of highly mobile artillery with pinpoint accuracy," AM General said.
The Hawkeye has a standard firing range of 11.6 kilometers, which can extend to 19.5 kilometers using rocket-assisted projectiles. The howitzer can fire up to eight rounds per minute, maintaining this rate for three minutes before it drops to three rounds per minute.
AM General emphasized that the design enhancements and performance upgrades are directly based on extensive field testing in Ukraine, where earlier versions of the Hawkeye system were employed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in real combat.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that by 2026, Ukraine and the EU would match Russia in artillery production. He is confident that in the future, Ukrainian artillery could become more powerful than that of the enemy.
