Maintaining Public Transport Fares in Kyiv

The authorities of Kyiv are exploring ways to sustain the existing fares for public transport — any price increases will not be considered until the war ends.

This was stated by the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko, on his Telegram channel.

He emphasized that public transport in the capital is subsidized, and the difference between the current fare and an economically justified fare amounts to 11 billion hryvnias per year.

«These funds come from the Kyiv budget. And given that 8 billion (for Ukrzaliznytsia!) has been taken from the capital, there will not be enough funds for planned subsidies. Therefore, the Finance Department, having analyzed the expenses with this deficit, has proposed to reconsider the current fare adjustments again», — Klitschko noted.

He also highlighted that an additional billion hryvnias from the city budget goes towards free transportation for beneficiaries, and the state does not compensate these costs.

«Currently, we are doing everything possible to support people in this difficult social situation. However, the central government has taken away the city's ability to maintain transport fare levels. Therefore, we are looking for ways to rectify this situation and preserve the existing fares. As I mentioned earlier, we will not consider any fare increases until the end of the war!», — Klitschko concluded.
