On Tuesday, the White House officially launched its TikTok account, coinciding with the imminent deadline for Chinese parent company ByteDance to cease its operations in the United States.
This was reported by dpa.
The first video posted from the White House account featured highlights from public addresses by U.S. President Donald Trump, where he stated, "I am your voice."
ByteDance, based in China, has faced criticism in the United States over concerns that it could allow U.S. citizens' data to fall into the hands of the Beijing government.
The TikTok algorithm, which determines what videos users see next, is a key point of contention. Critics warn that the Chinese government could exploit the algorithm to influence public opinion in the U.S., a claim that TikTok and ByteDance have consistently denied.
As reported, on June 19, President Donald Trump postponed the deadline for the third time and signed an official order to extend the deadline for ByteDance to sell the American version of TikTok.
A law signed by President Joe Biden last year required TikTok to cease operations by January 19 unless ByteDance sold its American assets or showed significant progress toward a deal. Upon taking office on January 20, Trump opted not to enforce the ban—initially extending the deadline to early April and then to June 19.
