Alaska Airlines has temporarily grounded all its flights due to an IT system failure. This marks the second major incident for the airline within the past year.
According to Reuters, the American airline announced the suspension of all flights on Sunday evening due to a failure in its IT systems. The issue arose around 8 PM Pacific Time (3 AM GMT on Monday), although the specific cause of the outage has not been disclosed.
The airline indicated that residual effects would be felt throughout the evening but has not provided further details. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also not commented on the situation.
This is the second significant outage experienced by Alaska Airlines in the last year. In April 2024, the airline suspended flights due to a malfunction in the system responsible for calculating aircraft weight and balance.
Additionally, in June, Alaska's subsidiary Hawaiian Airlines reported a hacking incident that disrupted part of its IT systems. This incident coincided with warnings from Google and Palo Alto Networks about the activities of a hacker group known as 'Scattered Spider', which has shown interest in the aviation sector.
Alaska Air Group operates a fleet of 238 Boeing aircraft and 87 Embraer planes. The airline has not yet responded to inquiries regarding any potential links between the cyberattack and the recent outage.
