The Ukrainian documentary film «Cuba&Alaska» has secured the title of «Best Documentary Film» at the Rome International Film Festival.
This award is historic as the festival introduced a separate category for documentary films for the first time in two decades. The Ukrainian film became the inaugural winner.
«Every presentation of Ukrainian cinema abroad strengthens Ukraine's international voice. It is an opportunity to tell the world the truth about the war waged by Russia against Ukraine, showcasing the strength and resilience of Ukrainians. The victory of «Cuba&Alaska» in Rome is a testament to the professionalism and depth of Ukrainian cinema», stated Ukraine's Vice Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy, Tetiana Berezhna.
The jury, consisting of Romanian director and producer Alexandru Nanau, as well as director Santiago Maza and producer Nadia Trevisan, announced their decision during the awards ceremony on October 25. The Ukrainian film was recognized as the best among those in the «Progressive Cinema Competition» and «Special Screenings» categories.
«Death and resilience amidst war. This film takes us to the front lines of our European war — a conflict fought tirelessly by ordinary people like us for the sake of all of us against the barbaric Russia that continues to bring death and destruction across our continent. At the heart of the film are two young Ukrainian women who live each day just a step away from death, even now as we sit here in safety. Their extraordinary vitality and courage remind us never to abandon creativity and hope for the future, to live this fragile life to the fullest», the jury noted in their statement.
The film «Cuba&Alaska» tells the story of two combat medics, Cuba and Alaska, who together defend Ukraine, saving lives at the front. Together, they face the challenges of war with bravery, humor, and friendship. It is a story of how war changes but does not destroy. Even in the darkest moments, one can preserve inner light. The film is a product of international co-production involving Ukraine, Belgium, and France, and has already won two awards at the Brussels International Film Festival.
