Sasha Lunova's Exhibition: A New Perspective from the Ceiling

A new series of works by the young artist features vibrant canvases that emerged from her reflections on the ceiling in her bedroom.

The 'White World' contemporary art center presents the exhibition 'From the Ceiling' — a project by Sasha Lunova, a bright figure in the Ukrainian art scene and a member of the gallery team.

This time, the artist draws inspiration from an unexpected source — her ceiling adorned with textured wallpaper. The whimsical patterns, reminiscent of psychedelic tapestries from childhood, suggested the themes and images that Lunova intuitively transferred onto the canvas.

The exhibition showcases naive paintings with surreal motifs that balance between dreams and reality, creating a delicate phantasmagoria.

“I didn't plan anything specific. I was just lying there, looking up, capturing the beings that emerged from the relief of the ceiling… 'From the Ceiling' is about trusting your own perspective. Sometimes, you just need to look up,” Sasha Lunova shares.

The artist also asserts that this series of works came about quite spontaneously, outside traditional compositional logic. Unlike previous projects that were born from text and concepts, here everything began with a chance visual encounter — sparking a new wave of characters: vibrant, sincere, and sometimes fragmented, like outlines from a dream.

The exhibition curator, Jeremy Dirak, accompanies the project with a poetic text — an attempt to comprehend this extreme space:

“These are thoughts that are relatives of dreams. Strange beings that arise from an unknown source in consciousness. Sometimes they appear already dressed and ready for a party. Other times — only fragments of forms; just those parts that hold significance…”

The gallery notes that 'From the Ceiling' cleverly plays on contrasts: art descends from the heavens — both literally and metaphorically. And the white walls of the 'White World' reflect the artist's universe — a realm of naivety, sincerity, and bright 'madness.'
