On June 12, the Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Mykola Tochitsky participated in an off-site meeting of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on humanitarian and informational policy issues. The meeting was convened to assess the state of the national significance archaeological site «Area of the Coastal Urban Quarter of Medieval Kyiv», located at Postal Square in Kyiv.
The Minister, together with the Committee Chair Mykyta Poturaev, Committee members, representatives from the Kyiv City State Administration and NGOs, inspected the archaeological site as well as the national significance monument «Postal Station».
He noted that the Working Group of the Ministry of Culture is intensifying its activities to develop a plan for the museum establishment at the archaeological and historical site of national significance «Area of the Coastal Urban Quarter of Medieval Kyiv» at Postal Square in Kyiv, aiming to resolve all issues related to the preservation and development of this unique historical and cultural heritage object. The next meeting of the working group is scheduled for June 18, inviting representatives of the NGO «Museum of One Nation on Postal Square», the Kyiv City State Administration, and the Committee on Humanitarian and Informational Policy.
Participants of the off-site meeting unanimously supported the need to protect the site and took control of the situation, agreeing on the necessity of an open dialogue and the establishment of the legal status of the museum at the excavation site.
It is worth noting that the NGO «Museum of One Nation on Postal Square» has appealed to the President of Ukraine, requesting personal patronage over the archaeological site at Postal Square. The petition emphasizes that this area is where, according to historians, the Baptism of Rus took place, and unique remnants of urban development and paving from the 9th to 10th centuries have survived. The co-founder of the NGO held a hunger strike, demanding the preservation of the site and the establishment of a museum.
